Dear members of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons,
My name is Won Jai Lee, and I have the honor of serving as the 30th President of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (KSPRS).
In November 2024, the 30th board of directors was inaugurated on a new footing. Since its establishment in 1966, KSPRS has continuously developed and grown, driven by the engagement and contributions of our members. We currently oversee three affiliate societies—the Korean Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Korean Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, and the Yeongnam & Honam Regional Society—along with the Korean Association of Plastic Surgeons, which represents surgeons in private hospitals. Additionally, we have seven branches and 18 academic associations under our umbrella. These groups are actively expanding their expertise. KSPRS, along with its affiliate societies, branches, and academic associations, will work in harmony to advance the field of plastic surgery.
We host two key academic events: PRS KOREA, an international academic conference, and the Research and Reconstruction Forum (R & R Forum). These events are designed to promote ongoing academic exchanges both within the country and internationally. PRS KOREA is a globally recognized conference that attracts over 1,300 medical professionals from more than 40 countries annually, setting the international standard for plastic surgery. In response to the rapidly changing medical environments at home and abroad, we have broadened our scope of engagement by offering both online and offline activities. This approach allows for continuous interaction among our members. Moving forward, we will continue to adapt to the evolving domestic and international medical landscapes, work in harmony with our members, and improve the status of plastic surgery through our activities as a professional society.
In addition, KSPRS has broadened its international outreach by signing MOUs with organizations in various countries, including the US, Japan, Taiwan, Turkey, Thailand, Canada, Indonesia, the UAE, and Germany. We are actively participating in the Asian Federation of PRAS (APRAS) and the International Confederation of Plastic Surgery Societies (ICOPLAST) to elevate the status of Korean plastic surgery societies. Archives of Plastic Surgery (APS), the official journal of KSPRS, has emerged as a leading plastic surgery journal in Asia. We are committed to achieving inclusion in the SCIE for our society and its members.
Plastic surgery has played a significant role in promoting human health and quality of life. It encompasses wound management, reconstructive surgery across various specialties, flap surgery, advanced robot-assisted surgery, and aesthetic surgery that integrates aesthetic principles. These contributions have elevated the reputation of Korean plastic surgery beyond Asia. Furthermore, our mission includes training plastic surgeons who are committed to ethical medical practices and expertise, thereby contributing to the advancement of human health.
I am committed to collaborating with the board of directors and our members to ensure the stable development and transformation of KSPRS. My focus will be on building a foundation of trust by enhancing the relationships among our members, promoting greater collaboration among surgeons in private hospitals, salaried doctors, professors, and residents, and bolstering the public interests of KSPRS. Additionally, I will strive to position KSPRS as a leader in advancing the education system for residents, adapting to the evolving medical environments and the fields of reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.
Our members' continuous engagement and enthusiasm serve as our driving force. I will do my best to help elevate KSPRS to the status of a top-tier academic society on a global scale, extending beyond Asia.
Thank you.
Won Jai Lee
President of KSPRS
Dear Colleagues and KSPRS members,
My name is Daegu Son, chairman of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Our society was founded on the hard work and sacrifice of our teachers who embraced Western medicine after the Korean War. They brought back advanced medical training and education from abroad, allowing these practices to flourish here.
Our society carries a great responsibility for nurturing the growth of each member, protecting their rights, and advancing our medical field. Although academic areas used to be separate, they are now coming together in an era of convergence. Plastic surgery is a broad and diverse field. By working together with various disciplines, we can achieve outstanding results through research that combines different areas of knowledge.
The Korean Society of Plastic Surgery has grown beyond Asia and is now recognized internationally. Our research groups have made significant progress and are developing new techniques that lead the field worldwide.
Fifty years ago, in the 1970s, plastic surgery started in hospitals throughout Korea. Our teachers had a vision which they nurtured with passion and commitment, helping shape who we are today. By building on the legacy of these great pioneers, we have achieved world-class status. However, there is still more to improve.
It is often said that the future belongs to those who dream. Together, let us dream about what the Korean Society of Plastic Surgery will achieve 50 years from now.
Son, Dae-Gu
Chairman of General Assembly of KSPRS
